Developmental Biology

Developmental biology is the science of studying organism from beginning to the end. For humans, developmental biology researches the sperm and ovum generation, fertilization, development of the embryo, aging and death. Developmental biology also encompasses the biology of regeneration, asexual reproduction, metamorphosis, and the growth and differentiation of stem cells in the adult organism.

Adhesion molecules are critical for an array of biological processes. For instance, in development they play key roles in tissue morphogenesis, cell migration, and axon guidance. In the immune system, they regulate leukocyte interactions and are important for cell activation. They also mediate leukocyte contact with blood vessel endothelia and are essential for transmigration. Pathologically, adhesion molecules affect tumor cell invasiveness and metastases.Inflammatory cell recruitment requires the concerted action of at least five major sets of adhesion molecules: integrins, immunoglobulin-like molecules, selectins, carbohydrate structures serving as selectin ligands, and certain ectoenzymes.

The cardiovascular system begins its activity when the fetus is barely 4 weeks old and is the last system to cease activity at the end of life. This body system is so vital that its activity helps define the presence of life.
The heart, arteries, veins, and lymphatics form the cardiovascular network that serves the body’s transport system. This system brings life-supporting oxygen and nutrients to cells, removes metabolic waste products, and carries hormones from one part of the body to another.
The cardiovascular system, often called the circulatory system, may be divided into two branches: pulmonary and systemic circulations. In pulmonary circulation , blood picks up oxygen and liberates the waste product carbon dioxide. In systemic circulation (which includes coronary circulation), blood carries oxygen and nutrients to all active cells and transports waste products to the kidneys, liver, and skin for excretion.

Food passes through a long tube inside the body known as the alimentary canal or the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract). The alimentary canal is made up of the oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestines, and large intestines.

In animals, sexual reproduction encompasses the fusion of two distinct gametes (sex cells) to form a zygote. Gametes are produced by a type of cell division called meiosis. When gametes unite in fertilization, a new individual is formed.
Gametes are haploid, containing only one set of chromosomes. For example, human gametes contain 23 chromosomes. After fertilization, a zygote is produced from the union of an egg and sperm. The zygote is diploid, containing two sets of 23 chromosomes for a total of 46 chromosomes.
There are two mechanisms by which fertilization can take place. The first is external (the eggs are fertilized outside of the body) and the second is internal (the eggs are fertilized within the female reproductive tract). In either case, each egg is fertilized by a single sperm to ensure that the correct chromosome numbers are preserved.

Gastrulation, occurring during the second week after fertilization, involved the formation of the three fundamental germ layers of the embryo – the ectoderm, the mesoderm, and the endoderm. During this time, important signal-calling phenomena – called embryonic inductions – set the molecular stage for the initiation of organ formation. In addition, the fundamental asymmetry of the body is set in place.

The immune system is a complex network of cells, tissues and organs that work together to protect the body from harmful substances and organisms and defend against disease. The immune system can be classified into distinct responses, such as innate immunity and adaptive immunity, or humoral immunity and cell-mediated immunity.

Growth factors and morphogens regulate embryonic patterning, cell fate specification, cell migration, and morphogenesis. The activity and behavior of these signaling molecules are regulated in the extracellular space through interactions with proteoglycans. The formation of morphogen concentration gradients directs the biological responses of surrounding cells. Graded responses occur as a result of morphogens binding to specific cell surface receptors that subsequently activate intracellular signaling pathways and promote or repress gene expression at specific threshold concentrations. Activation or inactivation of these signaling pathways provides positional information that ultimately determines cell fate decisions, tissue organization, and morphology. Research in model organisms has revealed that morphogenetic fields are involved in many aspects of development. Research in higher organisms has demonstrated that homologues of these same signaling molecules regulate vertebrate axis formation, anterior/posterior polarity during limb development, mesoderm patterning, and numerous other processes that establish an organism’s basic body structure.

The muscular system is responsible for the movement of the human body. Attached to the bones of the skeletal system are about 700 named muscles that make up roughly half of a person’s body weight. Each of these muscles is a discrete organ constructed of skeletal muscle tissue, blood vessels, tendons, and nerves. Muscle tissue is also found inside of the heart, digestive organs, and blood vessels. In these organs, muscles serve to move substances throughout the body.

TNeurogenesis is defined as the formation of new neurons from neural stem and progenitor cells which occurs in various brain regions such as the subgranular zone of dentate gyrus in the hippocampus and the subventricular zone of lateral ventricles.

The vertebrate nervous system consists of the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord, and retina) and the peripheral nervous system (sensory neurons, nerves, and ganglia). During embryonic development, dorsal mesoderm cells produce growth factors that specify neural cell fate in the ectoderm. Neurulation also establishes two ectodermally-derived strips of cells above the neural tube called the neural crest. Neural crest cells migrate away from the neural tube and give rise to the peripheral nervous system and other specialized cell types. Later stages of nervous system development include neural stem cell differentiation into neurons and glial cells, neuron migration, axon outgrowth, and synapse formation and remodeling.

Germ cells, which ultimately form the next generation organism, are considered immortal as they can infinitely self replicate, in contrast to somatic cells. During embryonic development germ cells form from precursor or primordial germ cells. Since they are formed in a different part of the embryo, primordial germ cells must migrate to the location of the future gonads where they become mature germ cells. Failure to migrate to the desired location can result in rare germ cell tumors in other parts of the body. Germ cell research is an area of high interest in the fields of development, reproduction, and cancer biology.

The skeletal system includes all of the bones and joints in the body. Each bone is a complex living organ that is made up of many cells, protein fibers, and minerals. The skeleton acts as a scaffold by providing support and protection for the soft tissues that make up the rest of the body. The skeletal system also provides attachment points for muscles to allow movements at the joints.

Tissue regeneration is the process of renewal and growth to repair or replace tissue that is damaged or suffers from a disease. In addition, many embryonic tissues, such as the spinal cord, heart, and limbs, have some regenerative potential and may utilize mechanisms that can be exogenously activated in adult tissues. For example, BMP signaling regulates nervous system development, and SMAD reactivation plays a critical role in adult nerve regeneration and repair in animal models of spinal cord injury. While similar molecular pathways are utilized during embryogenesis and adult tissue regeneration, recent reports suggest the mechanisms by which these developmental programs are reactivated and maintained may vary in adult tissues. Recent studies have described the ability of tissue-resident adult (somatic) stem cells to repopulate organs such as the liver and pancreas. Additionally, induced pluripotent stem cells have demonstrated potential for repair and regeneration of diverse tissues including the heart following ischemia, retinal pigmented epithelium in studies of age-related macular degeneration, and pancreas following loss of insulin-secreting beta-cells.
