Paraoxonase 1 (PON 1) is an esterase and lactonase that is synthesized in the liver and secreted into blood, associated exclusively with high density lipoproteins (HDL). It hydrolyzes the toxic oxon metabolites of several organophosphorous insecticides and nerve agents. This protein has been implicated in protection from atherosclerosis. PON 1 possesses both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Protecting LDL and HDL from lipid peroxidation, PON 1 degrades specific oxidized cholesteryl esters and oxidized phospholipids contained in lipoproteins.
