Vial Rack, Solid Aluminum, for 2ml Microvials This solid aluminum vial rack for 2ml vials offers superior temperature control during beadbeating than bead mill cell disrupters relying on flowing air chilled by dry-ice or refrigeration. It is well-known that chilled air has much poorer heat conductivity than chilled metal. The block is pre-cooled in a deep freezer or, to cryo-temperatures with dry-ice or liquid nitrogen.  Having dimensions of a standard deep-well microplate, it is compatible with not only our MiniBeadbeater-96 but with several competitor microplate shakers.

An important accessory for the MiniBeadbeater-96 when temperature control is a concern**.  Typically, a vial filled with beads, sample and extraction media warms up ~10 degrees per minute of beadbeating.  Our 2 ml vial holder (capacity 48 vials) is machined out of high-heat-conductivity aluminum.

The vial holder is pre-cooled to low temperatures inside a refrigerator, a  -80º C freezer, or with liquid nitrogen.  During the beadbeating process, the chilled vial holder keeps the sample temperature at desired low temperatures.

A related application is ‘dry’ bead-grinding of fresh tissue by the cryopulverization technique.  The sample, beads, vials, and vial holder are all pre-chilled to liquid nitrogen temperatures before being processed in a Mini-BeadBeater-96.

Replacement O-Ring, 2/pkg What is the O-ring used for?  Both the MiniBeadbeater-16 and -24 use a rubber O-ring to restrain the wiggle head of the machine, thus generating the high-energy shaking motion required for good cell disruption.  The rubber O-ring fatigues over time and eventually will break.  Typically, replacement will be required in months or years, depending on the amount of use of the machine.  The MBBs are designed with the O-ring positioned on the outside, front for quick, easy replacement.  Two spare O-rings are included with a new machine.  607OR
Small Chamber Assemblies These chambers have total volumes of 15 or 50 ml.  For proper homogenization, the chambers should be filled approximately half full of beads and half full of your cell suspension.  The small chambers fit inside the standard 350 ml BeadBeater polycarbonate chamber.  The latter may be filled with crushed ice and water and to help keep the sample cold.

The chambers are made of stainless steel and polypropylene plastic and can be autoclaved, if desired.

MiniBlender Chambers Small volume polypropylene blender chambers with stainless steel blades.  Suitable for blending or homogenizing smaller sample volumes.  The closed chambers feature minimizes release of contents to the environment during blending and, conversely, minimizes out side contamination of the homogenate.

The two smallest chambers (10-30 ml and 20-80 ml) come with a outer polycarbonate jar that facilitates joining the Miniblender chamber to the Hamilton Beach blender motor and, if desired, can also serve as an ice-water jacket during blending to help keep the homogenate cold.

Because of the low energy demands required to drive these smaller blender chambers, a low-cost kitchen blender purchased from Walmart or like demestic supplier can be substituted for the more costly comercial grade blenders featured on our web site. However, make sure it is a Hamilton Beach brand blender.

Aluminum Small Chamber SMALL VOLUME SAMPLE ACCESSORY FOR THE BEAD-BEATER  –

Thick-walled aluminum chamber with Teflon rotor.  Working volume is 15 ml.  The chamber can be precooled and the superior heat capacity and large mass of the 1/2 inch thick aluminum walls keep the sample cold.  The SASC-15 can also be combined with the BeadBeater ice water jacket (the later comes standard with the BeadBeater) for the strictest of temperature control.  Containing no plastic component, the chamber is resistant to phenol/chloroform and acetone solvents.

Silicone rubber plug cap, pack of 100 These silicone rubber caps were specifically designed for use with our 2 ml stainless steel microvials.  Use when beadbeating or dry-milling with steel beads.

Due to the high shaking energy of the Mini-BeadBeater series of cell disrupters, dense steel beads can break the standard polyethylene flange caps that are supplied with our stainless steel vials. The silicone rubber caps are also recommended when grinding tissue samples at liquid nitrogen temperatures.  Silicone rubber caps can be washed and serialized using standard procedures.

Leaf Tissue Punch A modified paper hole punch, the leaf tissue punch produces a single 1/4 inch diameter disc.  The punch holds a standard snap-top or screw-top 2 ml microvial in a fixed position while receiving the sample without further touching or manipulation.

This low cost leaf punch is great for field work and saves time when doing multiple sampling.  The punch can be autoclaved.

UltraBlender Chamber A Rotor-Stator type homogenizer in a sealed chamber. This accessory homogenizes everything a classical cutting blade blender does, but about three times faster, with finer dispersion of the sample and little entrainment of air. It is comparable in performance to the BioHomogenizer Model 1285.

NOTE: The Ultrablender is powered by a Hamilton Beach motor base….the same motor unit used in our BeadBeater and our model 909 Blade Blender. Compatible Hamilton Beach food blenders are also available from stores and on-line sources.
