Description
Description: CD4 is a 55 kD single-chain type I transmembrane glycoprotein and a member of the Ig superfamily. It is involved in the recognition of MHC class II molecules. Furthermore, CD4 is the primary receptor for HIV. CD4 initiates the early phase of T-cell activation via its association with the T-cell receptor complex and protein tyrosine kinase, Lck. In addition, CD4 functions as a mediator of direct neuronal damage in infectious and immune-mediated diseases of the central nervous system.
