Description: The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the interleukin 1 cytokine family. This cytokine is produced by activated macrophages as a proprotein, which is proteolytically processed to its active form by caspase 1 (CASP1/ICE). This cytokine is an important mediator of the inflammatory response, and is involved in a variety of cellular activities, including cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. The induction of cyclooxygenase-2 (PTGS2/COX2) by this cytokine in the central nervous system (CNS) is found to contribute to inflammatory pain hypersensitivity. This gene and eight other interleukin 1 family genes form a cytokine gene cluster on chromosome 2. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Interleukin-1 beta belongs to the interleukin 1 cytokine family, which plays a critical role in inflammation, immunity, antiviral responses, and a variety of diseases. It has been reported that IL-1β-induced IL-6 production is mediated by both PI3K and IRAK4 in A549 cells. To test the bioactivity of IL-1β, A549 cells were seeded into 24-well plate at a density of 1x10⁵ cells/ml, and allowed to attach overnight before treated with or without certain concentrations (1 ng/ml, 10 ng/ml) of IL1-β for 4h. IL-6 levels in the cell supernatant were determined by ELISA that IL-6 increased significantly after stimulated with IL1-β.
For short-term storage (1-2 weeks), store at 4C. For long-term storage, store at -20C or below. After reconstitution, keep as concentrated solution. Avoid freeze-thaw cycles.
