Description: This gene encodes one of the three enolase isoenzymes found in mammals. This isoenzyme, a homodimer, is found in mature neurons and cells of neuronal origin. A switch from alpha enolase to gamma enolase occurs in neural tissue during development in rats and primates. [provided by RefSeq]

NSE is a 78 kDa gamma-homodimer expressed as a dominant enolase-isoenzyme in neuronal and neuroendocrine tissues. Elevated levels of serum NSE are often associated with neuronal disorders and neural crest-derived tumors. Up to 70 percent of patients with small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) have high levels of serum NSE, as SCLC cells can express neuronal gene programs.
Store as concentrated solution. Centrifuge briefly prior to opening vial. For short-term storage (1-2 weeks), store at 4C. For long-term storage, aliquot and store at -20C or below. Avoid multiple freeze-thaw cycles.
