Description

Description: IL-1 binds two receptors, IL-1RI and IL-1RII. The ligands IL-1alpha and IL-1beta exert all of their various biological actions by binding IL-1RI. IL-1RII has a shortened cytoplasmic domain that is unable to transduce signals and therefore acts as a decoy receptor and competitively antagonizes the binding of IL-1alpha and IL-1beta, thereby reducing their biological effects. Binding of the ligands to IL-1RI is enhanced by an accessory protein, IL-1R-AcP. IL-1RI is expressed on T cells, thymocytes, dendritic cells, fibroblasts, vascular endothelial cells, epithelial cells and neural cells. It is an 80 kD transmembrane glycoprotein.
