Description: In the blood, the defence against harmful attack of reactive species and particularly, against free radicals, is guaranteed by so-called plasma antioxidant barrier. The antioxidant power of the barrier is valuated by measuring the ability of such barrier to oppose the massive oxidant action of hypochlorous acid (HClO). In the OXY-Adsorbent Test, the sample of plasma to be tested undergoes the massive oxidant action of a know-title HClO solution. After a defined interval, residual HClO undergoes the reaction with a chromogenic mixture, that is oxidized by residue HClO and is transformed in a pink-coloured derivative. Besides the "scavengers" antioxidant, with the OXY-Adsorbent Test we can also measure the so called "SHOCK ADSORBERS" (for example mucopolysaccharides, amino acids, proteins, etc.) all the antioxidants not active from the chemical point of view but able to "plug" the oxidant action of ROS, so representing "sacrificial" elements.
