Description

Description: Indican test is a colorimetric method capable of determining the presence of Indican in urine. The indican or indoxyl sulfate or is a product derived from intestinal catabolism of tryptophan. The concentration of urinary Indican is higher when there are putrefactive phenomena on the proteins. This phenomenon is due to an alteration of the intestinal bacterial flora (intestinal dysbiosis), which is favoured by a poor diet, lack of physical activity, and use of drugs (for example antibiotics). The Indican is mainly eliminated via the kidney and its levels also have an inverse correlation with the degree of renal function. In presence of Curzon and Walsh's reagent, the Indican is combined with the aldehyde group of the p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde with the formation of a colour complex.
