Description

Description: Human Programmed Death-Ligand 1 (PD-L1) is a protein that is a part of the immune checkpoint pathway which regulates the system used to balance the interaction between tumor cells and immune surveillance 1. Unlike PD-1, which is mainly found on T-cells and acts as a receptor, PD-L1 is predominantly present on tumor cells and antigen-presenting cells. It serves as a mediator of immune tolerance by exploiting natural pathways that prevent autoimmunity. Tumors can evade the immune system and avoid detection by expressing PD-L1, inhibiting T-cell activation 2 . Inflammatory cytokines in the tumor microenvironment further enhance this evasion strategy by increasing PD-L1 expression 3 . This highlights how tumors adapt and utilize the body's checkpoints for survival and growth. The complex involvement of PD-L1 in both tolerance and cancer immunoevasion emphasizes its significance as a target, for therapy. Blocking PD-L1 aims to dismantle the shield it provides to tumors allowing the immune system to regain its ability to eliminate cells 4 .
