Oxidative stress refers to the imbalance of the production and elimination of oxygen free radicals in the body or cells, which leads to the accumulation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and Reactive Nitrogen Species (RNS) in vivo or cells, resulting in oxidative damage. A large number of studies have shown that oxidative stress causes the occurrence and development of a variety of diseases (see the chart below).

There are two kinds of antioxidant system, one is enzyme antioxidant system, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and so on. The other is non-enzymatic antioxidant system, including ergothioneine, vitamin C, vitamin E, glutathione, melatonin, α-lipoic acid, carotenoid, trace element copper, zinc, selenium (Se) and so on.

Kidney function refers to the function of kidney excreting metabolic waste, maintaining the stability of sodium, potassium, calcium and other electrolytes and the function of acid-base balance. The changes of creatinine clearance rate, serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen can be used to determine the normality or impairment degree of the kidney function. For example, when chronic kidney function is impaired, the creatinine clearance rate is decreased. While the serum creatinine is still within the normal range, which is a mild impairment of kidney function. If serum creatinine also increased, it is moderate damage.

The normal metabolism of amino acids is an important basis for life activities. All tissue cells can metabolize amino acids, including deamination, decarboxylation, ammonia metabolism and oxidative decomposition capacity.

Elabscience® offers a variety of methods to detect total protein content, such as BCA (E-BC-K318), Biuret (E-BC-K165), and Coomassie brilliant Blue (E-BC-K168). The biuret method is preferred to detect the total protein content in serum. If the sample contains chelating agent such as EGTA, high concentration EDTA or reducing agent such as DTT, mercaptoethanol, only Coomassie brilliant blue method is suggested for the detection. The BCA method is preferred to detect the total protein content in plant samples.
